Whom shall I fear?

The Lord is with me, I will not be afraid; what can anyone do to me? 7. It is the Lord who helps me, and I will see my enemies defeated.  8 It is better to trust in the Lord than depend on people. 9 It is better to trust in the Lord than depend on human leaders.

I’m not sure what you have planned today.  Maybe you’ve just had a chance to read this, and your day is coming to a close.  In either case, you, as I reflect on Psalm 118, I’m reminded that as we believe and trust in the Lord, it is quick to lose sight that no matter time of day or task at hand, our Heavenly Father is always on our side.  When you truly believe and trust Him as the center of your life, you can live without fear. How awesome it is to know right now we can live every moment without any worry when we live in obedience.

Often, my lack of trust and wisdom throughout years and even in recent moments have led me down many dead-end roads. Times of complete self-absorption that goes opposite of where the Lord is asking me to be. He takes me through hills and valleys that remind me of my desire and need to put more trust in Him for every aspect of my life. Along this journey that includes being a parent, He has led me to a daily prayer asking the Lord to have His will with my life and to help me to show His love for Him in my actions and words. More Him, less me!

I think of the father in Mark that was asking Jesus for help with his son. He says in Mark 9:24 Immediately, the father of the child cried out and said, “I believe; help my unbelief!”  — Help me in any unbelieving time Lord. Or times where I think I have it figured out without your

The people-pleasing days and moments can come calling daily.  Pray, Listen, and take the next step. He is by our side!

Have a blessed day.

His Loving Patience

What a great Top 10 Lynden shared with us yesterday on things we take for granted.  His examples were definitely aligned with mine as a reminder about many of the things we have in this life. After Psalm 105’s reminder about the hidden things we take for granted comes a reminder in Psalm 106 of God’s grace and patience despite our forgetful and self-willed lives.

Todays Reading: Psalm 106

I read and listened to a recent Podcast that recommended going back and reading different Bible versions.  Today I landed on the Good news Translation.

1 Praise the Lord!
Give thanks to the Lord, because he is good;
his love is eternal.
2 Who can tell all the great things he has done?
Who can praise him enough?

Who can praise him enough? I know that I can’t.  Even if I started a list right now, I’d still be making a list for days to come. Take a moment to pause and reflect. Write it down in your journal, on the side of your bible, say them out loud.

  • Praise for His transformation in my life.
  • Praise for His love and grace He shows and gives me.
  • Praise for my family.
  • Praise for small groups.
  • Praise for 1777 posts Bible Journal has posted since 1/1/2016.

These were just some I thought about today.  As you continue to read through this chapter, you will be reminded of the importance of our obedience in verse 3.

3 Happy are those who obey his commands,
who always do what is right.

Verses 6-43 humble me and remind me of the blind, rebellious, and forgetful we can be in our sinful nature how stories from the Israelites shortcomings can connect back to our stories today.  To my story.  To yours.

Thankfully, we have a Father who has given and shows grace to those who deserved judgment. Verse 44-47.  God’s faithfulness to us is not dependent on our faithfulness to him.  Just a few weeks ago, we remembered that God sent His son to die for you and me.  He showed us grace when we were still sinners.  Imagine the grace He shows as his children.

44 Yet the Lord heard them when they cried out,
and he took notice of their distress.
45 For their sake he remembered his covenant,
and because of his great love he relented.
46 He made all their oppressors
feel sorry for them.

47 Save us, O Lord our God,
and bring us back from among the nations,
so that we may be thankful
and praise your holy name.

48 Praise the Lord, the God of Israel;
praise him now and forever!
Let everyone say, “Amen!”

Praise the Lord!

Ouch…I deserved that.

Have you ever been disciplined? Have you ever had to discipline your children?

If we are honest, I’m sure we would say Yes to both. (If you don’t have children yet, this opportunity will eventually arise.)  Often, when I have to discipline my children, I see many examples of my younger self in them. I won’t take any opportunity here to talk about my better half.  Discipline is not fun, but it is necessary.  As I was reading Psalm 94 for today, there were certain words that jumped off the page for me as this Psalm focuses on rightful judgment and discipline.

In my NIV version, the words “proud,” “arrogantly,” “boasting,” and “vanity” all come together for a common theme.  Selfishness! It’s about me. In my children’s case, it’s about them without consideration for others.  We often have many opportunities to teach.

Psalm 94:13-14 Blessed is the one you discipline, Lord,
the one you teach from your law;
13 you grant them relief from days of trouble,
till a pit is dug for the wicked.

Just like a loving parent that has to discipline their children, God sometimes disciplines us.  My example would include yelling at our kids not to run out in the road for the 10th time and have them sit out to learn their lesson. Sometimes God disciplines us to help us grow.  How has he done this with you in your years? Whatever form it may take for you or your children, this discipline is never enjoyable, but it is necessary to teach us right from wrong.

Maybe you have felt God’s hand of correction lately. My selfish reaction to a recent situation that didn’t go the way I planned was a perfect example of my shortcomings.  Accept God’s correction as proof that He loves you. Let it remind you that God urges us to follow His path instead of our own each day. So one day, we will be in His Kingdom together.

As you enter into this day, let’s watch our pridefulness, the boasting, the vanity that we can all fall trap to when we lose sight of our God that is standing right by our side.

Hebrews 12:6 because the Lord disciplines the one he loves,
and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.

Hebrew 12:11 No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.

Nations Prayer

Today’s Reading: Psalm 82

As we have read through the Psalms recently, we have been able to read from Asaph. (Asaph was a leader of one of the Temple choirs. 1 Chronicles 25:1) Whether Asaph was the author or just transcribing for David, these collections of Psalms (49,50, 73-83) celebrate the sovereignty of God, God’s hand in history, God’s faithfulness, and God’s covenant. These psalms remind us that the worship of our God the almighty should be continual.

At first, I had to look up Asaph and the Asaphites. These people were temple singers.  Asaph had the opportunity to see the best and the worst in the officials while serving and participating in public and private settings.  Psalm 82 reminds us that God is the true judge of all judges. The integrity of our justice system in a nation provides a clear indication of our society’s health.

On the dawn of an election day like today, I realize that whatever your vote may be, our ultimate judge will be our Lord. I pray for all those elected and in authority. 1 Timothy 2:2 says for kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.

We can only pray for those in authority worldwide so that their societies will be those who spread the Good News of Jesus Christ.  Remember Romans 13:1 Let every soul be subject under higher powers.

I pray that all those elected already know or come to know our Lord more and more each day.  That in their roles, they are put in positions to do good. Please pray with me for these officials in authority that make decisions that can impact us, our children, and grandchildren.

Psalm 80:1 God has taken his place in the divine council; in the midst of the gods, he holds judgment:

O Lord, Do not Delay

Today’s Reading: Psalm 70

Humor me for a second with these questions. Have you ever felt under pressure? Can you think of a day where you were pressed for time to where you allowed yourself to be stressed?   These moments have happened more than I would like to admit.  Hopefully, today you will have some peace as you focus on His Word and the truth of His will for your life today.

I have a gift that allows me to save things until the last minute and not get stressed. It is a gift I’m working on avoiding, unlike today as I seek His wisdom. David’s prayer in Psalm 70 reminds me of His answers even in our haste.

These last couple of weeks have been eventful. As a principal, our schools’ COVID impact has meant constantly changing, requiring the on-going need to pivot and try to communicate the best we can. Our children have been involved in some travel sports that require scheduled practices and games at various times and places.  On the home front, we try our best to make time to connect with family, friends, and neighbors.

As this last week approached, we juggled preparing for a family getaway! Exciting!  Still, the rush that followed up until today captured many moments where I could sense the anxiety of the time crunch creep in.

Psalm 70:1 Make haste, O God, to deliver me! o Lord, make haste to help me! 5 But I am poor and needy; hasten to me, O God! You are help and my deliverer, O Lord, do not delay!

We seem to all live in the confines of time. God lives outside time. God is never rushed. He created time! David uses these 5 verses to show the urgency of prayer and the answer we will receive. These verses remind me to go to God with all I got.  That instead of trying to do it all myself and attempt to be everything to everyone all the time, I can submit to Him.  Cry out to God and say I need you! That when I am weak, He is strong. In the midst of these moments where the pressure of time is applying the squeeze. Pray, trust, have faith that our God knows what will happen.  He knows what we will face today, what we will face tomorrow.  He will be our help; He will be our deliverer.

So whatever day your day brings.  No matter what is next on your agenda. Take a moment to give God all you got.  Ask him to release the stress that starts to creep in as we move throughout the day.  The answer to all we need today is in Him.

Have a blessed – less stressed day!

Justice

Today’s Reading: Psalm 58

Have you ever felt the pain of injustice? The hurt that can come when false judgment has been passed on you or someone else close?

As I reflected on David’s words, I thought of the pain I’ve personally experienced when I’ve had judgments passed based on passes mistakes. Unfortunately, I also thought about the pain that I have caused others through my same shortcomings.  Romans 3:23 reminds me that we have all fallen short at some time or another. Whatever side of injustice or judgment you have been on, you understand the pain and anger that can accompany these times.  We read the anger in David’s words as he seeks justice through the Lord.

6 Break the teeth in their mouths, O God;
Lord, tear out the fangs of those lions!
7 Let them vanish like water that flows away;
when they draw the bow, let their arrows fall short.

Yes, there is a harshness to these verese when you go through today’s reading. Psalm 58 is an “imprecatory” psalm that calls upon God to deal with enemies.

There have been times where I’ve struggled with anger,, and the words, decisions, and actions made by someone else made me turn around and make the same mistakes. I pray for continued spiritual growth to seek God’s wisdom and not fall back on the human reasoning that does things to make matters worse or slander others.  To not seek revenge based on the emotions I’m feeling at that particular moment. At this moment, I’m reminded of the many verses that point us back to God’s words about revenge.

Matthew 18:21 Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?” 22 Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.

1 Peter 2:21 To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps. 22 “He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth.” 23 When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly.

Maybe you have faced a recent situation where you were judged wrongly, maybe some type of injustice.  I’m sorry, I wish there wasn’t the immediate pain we all feel when this happens. All I can say is seek God’s wisdom. Cry out and ask for our Lord’s peace in the middle of your pain.

Psalm 58:11 Then people will say,
“Surely the righteous still are rewarded;
surely there is a God who judges the earth.”

Lord,  We know you go before us and know everything that has happened and will happen in our lives. Help us to not doubt, dispute, or debate your plans. We will accept the trials we face even when they may seem injust or in false judgment knowing these trials humble us and will wean us away from this world.  These words and actions that temporarily hurt us will compare nothing to an eternity, give us comfort in these trials and help us always to turn to you.  Work in our hearts.  Amen

Be Still

Today’s Reading: Psalm 46

There is so much to pull from Psalm 46.  I will try to bracket a couple of the beginning and ending verses that spoke to me when reading this week.  Let’s start here.

1 God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.

Quick question for you,  “Do you turn to our Lord when you are in trouble or need strength?

I know we all face troubles. Trouble can look like a lot of things. They come in the form of disappointments, frustrations, misunderstandings, unfulfilled dreams, unmet expectations, great loss, great loneliness, fear, criticism, persecution, conflict.  At one point or another, you may have faced one or all of these scenarios. The pain from divorce, abuse, failure, and many other situations that either happened or I put myself in. I should have known they would come with the nickname “trouble.” (This is another story and need for prayer.)

Recently I talked with multiple family members and a friend who are going through some trials of relationships, depression, and anxiety.  Some have turned to alcohol and others to medications that help with the stress.  Both of these solutions seemed to take away the pain temporarily but had bigger, more negative impacts in other areas besides what they were currently dealing with. In these conversations, we have talked about our hope, refuge, and strength coming from the Lord.

There are also times when we deal with trials and pain by keeping ourselves busy.  Never taking time to be still and seek Him. As we have read through the Psalms, I’ve noticed how the Psalmist never really asks for the trials never to happen. The request is just delivery us from them.   We know that everyone will face trials.

We need to remember and trust that God is with us in every circumstance.

2 Corinthians 4:8 We are hard-pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair;

I’m going to bracket the start of Psalm 46:10 with the end.

10 He says, “Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth.”

In our modern world of noise, busyness, and 24/7 of being on the go, solitude is truly countercultural. It’s a very challenging behavior to adopt. To be with God without an agenda and to just be in His presence. In our trials, we face we can turn to God and find clarity in the silence.

When was the last time you intentionally spent a significant amount of time with God in solitude? Don’t bring your to-do list; just listen to His voice. If you can’t remember, this might be a clue to take some time. In fact, take a few minutes to be alone with God right now. Put your hands on your knees, palms down. Think of any of the concerns you have at this moment and imagine laying them down at His feet.  After you have given Him all your concerns, turn your palms up in a posture of receiving what God wants to give you.  Listen for His voice. Recite Psalm 46:10 now like this.

Be still, and know that I am God.

Be still, and know.

Be still.

Be.

Hebrews 5:11 As you know, we count as blessed those who have persevered. You have heard of Job’s perseverance and have seen what the Lord finally brought about. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy.

Psalm 34 – God’s Plans – His blessings

Happy Tuesday,

Today we will be reading Psalm 34.  There is a back story in 1 Samuel 21-22 that you will have to go back to when you get an opportunity.

You see, David had to live much of his life on the run hiding from Saul.  Today, when we read David’s words while on the run he decides to hide with the Philistines.  Yes, the Philistines. Remember the story of David & Goliath.  The last time they had been around each other was when David took care of Goliath.  This probably wasn’t an exciting moment in history for the Philistines. Still, David decided this was where he needed to hide on this occasion.  David went to a priest named Ahimelech in Nob.  Here was the place where the priest Ahimelech put the needs of David ahead of the religious rules by giving him holy food, keeping David safe, and even offering up Goliaths sword.   Make sure you go back and read.

In Psalm 34, David had just finished pretending to be crazy as a way to get away from being captured.  David’s crazy plan succeeded, and then He shares with Ahimelech the blessings God promises.  These verses are timely reminders for us today.

We are all active participants in God’s plans, with the trust in His perfectly timed blessings.

  • 34:4 He will deliver us from fear
  • 34:6 He will deliver us from trouble
  • 34:7 He guards us
  • 34:8 He shows us kindness
  • 34:9 He supplies our needs
  • 34:15 He listens when we talk with Him
  • 34:22 He redeems us

Do we do our part?

  • 34:4 & 10 Do I seek Him?
  • 34:6 & 17  Do I cry out to Him?
  • 34:8 Do I trust Him?
  • 34:22 Do I serve Him?

As I reflected on this story I know there are many times when I have forgotten to do my part.  I think God will just appear when I’m in trouble.  When I’m trying to figure it all out on my own without His looking back to scripture.  Do I seek Him?

When troubles happen at home, school, kids, work, family, financially. I can occasionally throw a pity party for myself or complaining about my circumstance forgetting about the molding God does in our lives.  Do I trust Him?

When I race through the day according to my own agenda. Only serving my to-do list.   Do I serve Him?

God, Today I commit all of my plans to You. Please have Your way with my life. Do what only You can do through my family, job, relationships, and future.  Align the desires of my heart with Your desires.  God, I’m sorry for my times when I lack trust.  We love you.  Amen

Why I believe – Psalm 22

  1. My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
        Why are you so far from saving me, from the words of my groaning?

Where have you heard that before? I have to admit as I was reading Psalm 22 and praying for God to help with making some connections to this chapter, I was at a loss. David had said the same thing Jesus said on the cross in Matthew 27:46 hundreds of years earlier.  Why?  As I walked into church Sunday a few minutes early, I sat in the back with my niece and told her what chapter I was writing about this week.  I shared with her the last time I wrote; I had shared some of my testimony through Psalm 10.  I told her how at a young age, I was a master at hiding from God. Now in Psalm 22, David was once again searching for God and felt abandoned and distant. My next comment to my niece as the music began was God would open some doors to help with Psalm 22.  In walks Ben Miller, guest Pastor at Eastview Christian Church and director of Encounter at ISU.   The series we are on is called Worship Reframed, with our focus on Worship: The Presence.  What do you think one of the chapters referenced.  Psalm 22.  Thank you, God.

David was crying out to God.  He felt like God’s presence was nowhere to be found. The truth is. The reminder and reason why I believe is I’m always reminded that God is always with us. God’s presence is with us in every journey.  My connection to Why I believe was this, and often I can let the volume of the world allow me to tune God out.  To not have ears that are open to His presence.  What volume is too loud in your ear right now, making it feel like God has abandoned you? Is it work-related? Schedule at home still keeping you too busy? Is it social media that portrays false images?  The volume of the world is so loud.  The fast-paced motion we live in our lives cloud the presence of Him right next to you.  He hasn’t forsaken us. We just are living in a culture that focuses our attention on us and our daily desires being filled.  Why do I believe? Because when you turn your attention to God and realize His presence is always by your side, your perception of life changes. You start the journey of being transformed.  God transforms us when we turn down the volume of the world and turn our focus on Him.

I love when Paul is talking with Timothy about false gods and the love of money.  In his final charge in 1 Timothy 6:11, Paul says, But you, man of God, flee from all this and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance, and gentleness.

What do you need to flee from that is allowing you to believe that God has abandoned you? Just like David, I lived many years of my life where the noise of the world helped decide every decision I was going to make.  It wasn’t until I turned down the volume.

Lean into God’s presence that is right where you are today.  Right now.  In Acts 17 24-28, Paul says that the God who made the world and heavens gives us all life and breath.  God perfectly marked out our appointed times throughout this journey we call life to reach out to Him and find Him, though He is not far from any of us(28).   Do you seek Him daily and find Him, or does the world drown out His presence?

I still stumble and feel like I can do this world on my own.  That’s when I remember I really can’t.  It’s all God, and I need to lean into God and seek out the unique presence of God in my life.  This is why I believe.

Psalm 22:28 For the kingdom is the Lord’s, and he rules over the nations.

Dear present Heavenly Father,

Thank you for never abandoning us.  Lord, you are always close, and in any of our moments of pain or fear, we can call on You.  Thank you for your closeness that has transformed my life that was abandoned by a world that could never provide the peace and love you have given freely. Meet us in unique moments of Your presence as we enter into this day to remind us that you are always near.  We love you. Amen

Why I Believe: David LaFrance

Today’s Reading:  Psalm 10

Psalm 10:1 Why, Lord, do you stand far off? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble?

At a young age, you only know what you know. We went to church at times but what happened, what I heard, and what I witnessed was different than my experiences at home.  The worldly choices made by my family and self got in the way of any connections the Lord was calling us to.  Selfishness, lies, and addictions took the front seat and we did the hiding from God. I would become a master at hiding physically, mentally, emotionally, and most importantly spiritually.  Still only like God can do, He would find me.

According to my study bible, Psalm 10 is one of the Lament Psalms. Laments typically have five components which can appear in any order: (1) an invocation, or cry to God; (2) a complaint – description of a crisis; (3) a petition; (4) a statement of confidence in the Lord; and (5) a vow to praise God. Laments typically arise from a specific situation, and understanding that situation can help readers apply its truths to their own experience.

For me, I remember literally crying out.  Poor me, why this, why that? I had lost my earthly father at an early age. Even before this memory, I could remember the addictions and fallouts from that.  It impacted our whole family. This was the path I knew.  My desires to live a life about myself and in the world filled me with an emptiness that no earthly pleasures could fill.  Trouble surrounded me. The only answer was God.  God saw my arrogance, my afflictions, and humbled me to my knees. ( I still need this more than I want to admit.) He showed me through my wife, family, and others that this vapor of life should only point to Him if you want any fullness and peace. In any moments where God seems hidden and you are needing to cry out, know He is always there. Just like you, just like me,  I needed to open my eyes, listen, and have faith in His plan for my life and not try to do everything for myself and by myself.

Christ’s love can break any cycles of the past. 2 Corinthians 5:17 If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old is gone, the new is here!

Why do I believe? I believe because God’s grace, love, and plans for my life are bigger and better than I will ever know or imagined. Jesus changes everything.  He transformed my life, my family, and He can change yours.

Psalm 10: 16-18  The Lord is King forever and ever; the nations will perish from his land. You, Lord, hear the desire of the afflicted; you encourage them, and you listen to their cry, defending the fatherless and the oppressed so that mere earthly mortals will never again strike terror.

Dear God, thank you for changing our downward trajectory. Thank you for loving us and making us new. I know Your work in us is ongoing. Please take away our pride so we can be more like you. Amen  Be Blessed
